Four Del Nortewrestlers make it to day twoof NCS event

FREMONT — Four Del Norte High wrestlers made it to the second day of the North Coast Section Individual Championships at Newark High in Fremont on Friday and will compete in the second day of the event today.

Junior Roger ‘Bronc' McCovey (285), ranked as the No.1 wrestler in the NCS and state in the heavywieght division, cruised to the second day with a 3-0 mark. He pinned all three of his opponents in the first round.

Assistant coach Clinton Schaad said he looked strong on Friday and the expectation is McCovey will be in the top four and make it to state in Bakersfield next week. The hope is he will win the the NCS title at 285.

Senior Jake Young went 2-1 losing a "heartbreaker" in overtime in his final match, Schaad said.

Young needs to win three of his matches to make it to stat and one match to place, which means being in the top eight.

Junior Kai Lemrise (152) went 3-1 and freshman Jordan Lacy (103) went 2-1 to make it to today.

They both need to win four matches to make it to state and two to place.
