REDDING — The Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team fell to Marin Academy 40-35 at the Enterprise tournament in Redding on Saturday.

The Warriors went 1-2 at the tournament and dropped to 8-9 for the year.

Senior point guard Robyn Suzuki was named to the all-tournament team. Head coach Buzz McCulloch said Suzuki did an excellent job distributing the ball, playing defense and hustling in all aspects of the game.

"She did a heck of a job," he said.

The contest started out well for Del Norte as the squad jumped out to an 11-9 first quarter lead, and led by one at the half. In the fourth, they had the lead until a few minutes left in the contest when Marin Academy stormed back and took a three-point lead with time running out.

Del Norte attempted a three-pointer near the end of the game but missed and fouled Marin, who scored both free throws to seal the five-point victory.

McCulloch said the momentum started to change when starting senior forward Baille McCulloch suffered an ankle injury late in third quarter. She is currently day-to-day. In the fourth, starting post player Michelle Stacey fouled out .Another key factor was from the free throw line where Marin Academy went 7-for-12 from the charity stripe in the second half.

"That hurt us," Buzz McCulloch said.

Natasha Short led Warrior scorers with 11 points and Lauryn Lesina had 10 points. Stacey had five and Baille McCulloch had four points. Suzuki and Krista Haban had two points each while Lisa Daniels had one point.

On Thursday, Del Norte plays in its Big 5 Conference opener and its first home game of the season against Fortuna.

The freshman team plays at 4:30 p.m. At 6 p.m. the junior varsity team takes the floor. The varsity game will be played at 7:30 p.m.
