CRESCENT CITY — The Del Norte High boys varsity basketball team will travel quite a way for its next three games.

Starting on Thursday, the Warriors will take part in the 2007 KSA EVENTS Pre-Holiday Basketball Tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex located at Walt Disney World in the Orlando, Fla. area.

Del Norte will take on Treasure Coast High School of Port St. Lucie, Fla. on Thursday in the Mickey Bracket. The tournament continues on Friday and Saturday. Treasure Coast, as of Friday, had a 4-4 mark for the year.

As far as Warrior head coach Blaine Lopez knows, this is the farthest any Del Norte basketball team has ventured to play a game and said he he's glad the squad will take part in this "once in a lifetime experience."

"I think the kids are pretty excited," Lopez said. "I'm pretty excited and I'm just the coach."

When scheduling the season, Lopez said he inquired about numerous tournaments in the area and region but they were already full.

He saw a flier for the Disney tournament and was able to grab a spot.

"It's just one of those things," Lopez said. "One thing led to another."

But to fly the 12 players and the coaching staff all the way to Orlando is not a cheap proposition, so parents started to put together fundraisers, including a raffle to pay for the trip.

In the end, the community came through to make going to Florida a reality.

"I think it says a lot, not just of the parents, but of the community," Lopez said.

Del Norte has had a good start to the season, going 5-0 and has not yet been truly challenged by a team so far.

On Thursday, they downed St. Bernard's of Eureka 61-41 in the Rotary Warrior Classic. The Warriors were supposed to play two games in the event today but the contests were recently canceled. But the other games, besides the Del Norte JV team against Brookings will tentatively go on as scheduled today.

The Warriors squad will leave on Tuesday for the Orlando area. While there, they will experience Walt Disney World and take in an Orlando Magic NBA game.

Lopez said it should be a fun trip, but added he and his players have not had much time to think about it because they were in the thick of basketball games.

The team leaves Florida on Dec. 23. Starting on Dec. 27, the Warriors will take part in the three-day Enterprise tournament in Redding.
