Obituaries: Sara Ann Soares(1926-2007)

Sara Ann Soares, a native of Del Norte County, was born on Aug. 7, 1926 and died in Crescent City on Nov. 11, 2007 at the age of 81 years.

She attended local schools and graduated from Del Norte High School and Humboldt State University. After teaching in Del Norte County for several years, she moved to Marin County where she married her husband of 51 years, Manuel "Nick" Soares. While in Marin County, she continued teaching physical education primarily at Our Lady of Lerreto School. Sara was also the tennis pro at the San Marin Country Club for many years.

She was an avid fisher who enjoyed the outdoors, including one of her favorite past times, camping. She returned to Crescent City in 1980.

Sara was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Crescent City Emblem Club, Lighthouse Quilters Guild and a member of T.O.P.S. for 20 plus years.

She is survived by her children and their spouses; Margaret Rose and John Anderson of Crescent City, Fred and Paula Soares of Crescent City, Jim and Tina Soares of Petaluma, Richard and Melinda Soares of Santa Rosa; her grandchildren, Sara Soares, Michael Soares, Michelle Soares, Ryan Alderman, Matthew and Daniel McCardley; her sister Eleanor Towers of Crescent City; her brother-in-law and his wife, Art and Dorothy Soares of San Rafael, as well as numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband Manuel "Nick" Soares, sister, Lois Wakefield and brothers, A.R. "Bob" Wakefield and Dick Wakefield. Visitation will be held at Wier's Mortuary Chapel in Crescent City on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007 at 9 a.m. till 7 p.m. A Rosary service will follow at 7 p.m.

A Christian burial service will be held at Wier's Chapel on Thursday Nov. 15, 2007 at 11 a.m. Interment services will follow at the family plot, St. Joseph Cemetery in Crescent City.
