The group, Kab Taws Tsau, or Firefly, perform a cultural dance at the Hmong New Year celebration at Crescent Elk Middle School on Saturday. The Hmong New Year coincides with the lunar calendar and celebrates the end of the rice harvest season. In Crescent City, between 60 and 80 Hmong families pitch in to throw the celebration, which includes cooking a spread of dishes including egg rolls, sticky rice and noodles for the entire community. For the Hmong people, the New Year is also a time to greet old friends and family. “Everyone comes home,” said Khou Vue, a Crescent Elk Middle School teacher and member of the Hmong Cultural Center of Del Norte County, California. “It’s not doing much but socializing and (having) family time.”
