A disturbing discovery Monday in Crescent City led authorities to arrest of a local man now accused of a string of child sex abuse and animal abuse charges.

Undersheriff Bill Steven said Wednesday afternoon that officers were called to a Cooper Avenue address on March 26 to respond to a report of a man causing a disturbance and breaking things.

Steven said responding officers noticed a puppy wrapped in a towel inside the residence that was not moving. Further investigation led officers to find two more injured puppies, one of which was unable to walk.

Officers alleged Robert James Davis Jr., 27, of Crescent City, was responsible for causing harm to the puppies and arrested him.

As they continued to investigate, officers found evidence that led them to believe Davis had been engaged in sexual crimes with a female minor, according to Steven.

“This was not an isolated incident,” Steven said. “This had been ongoing.”

Steven said officers were told that Davis had been using threats to harm the puppies in order to coerce the minor female into having sex with him.

According to staff at the Del Norte County District Attorney’s Office, Davis is being charged with lewd acts with a child over the age of 14 by force, rape of a minor by force, dissuading a victim or witness by threat or force and three counts of animal abuse.

Davis is currently being held at Del Norte County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
