Those wondering about the construction activity around and inside the former Ray’s Food Place in Crescent City may be happy to find a large retail store is moving in. Tractor Supply Company is a nationwide company offering agriculture equipment, pet supplies, horse and livestock products, and lawn and garden equipment. According to a press release from the company, it plans to hire 12 to 15 employees and predicts the store will open in early summer.

The 32,000 square foot building will include a sales floor, external support service area and pet wash station.

“The Tractor Supply team will also seek to support pet adoption initiatives, area 4-H clubs and FFA chapters, county fairs and livestock shows,” the release stated.

“We’re not just building a store, we’re building a team that understands the needs of the Crescent City community,” said District Manager Toni Hernandez. “We know this community values living ‘Life Out Here’ just like us—with a focus on caring for their home, land, pets and animals. With the addition of our new location, we’re able to ensure the Crescent City community is fully equipped with the products they need.”

City Community Development Director Eric Taylor said the company’s permit applications were approved by the city Planning Commission in October 2017. Some building permits were also required, since the company proposed to install a large shipping door and rebuild handicap accessibility equipment at the storefront.

The company is using its own contracted construction service from Kentucky. Taylor said the practice is common with national chain stores.

“It’s exciting,” Taylor said. “It will bring some local jobs, and of course, some sales tax revenue and will help diversify the local economy.”

Tractor Supply Company (NASDAQ: TSCO) is in its 80th year of operation and, since being founded in 1938, has grown to become the largest rural lifestyle retail store chain in the U.S., according to the press release. The company has 28,000employees, 1,700 stores in 49 states and an e-commerce website.
