The Smith River Alliance, in cooperation with many other local and state agencies, will be hitting the coast this year to clean up some areas in need.

While the Alliance usually holds the annual cleanup near the Smith River Forks boatramp, low lying smoke from areas fires has become a concern. Alliance Director Grant Werschkull said in speaking to partners with the U.S. Forest Service, it was suggested the cleanup “go coastal.” Cleanup groups will focus on properties in the Department of Fish and Wildlife boundaries and some areas in the Coastal Zone.

Werschkull said since all tipping fees for the collected waste will be covered, the Alliance and sponsors are seeking as many volunteers as possible to help.

Sponsors are still coming on board to support the cleanup and the locations have yet to be disclosed.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided to registered volunteers, who are asked to wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes and long pants. The cleanup starts 9 a.m. Saturday.
