Robert “Bob” Lopez, age 81, of Clovis, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017. Bob was born in Crescent City in 1936, to Herb and Enid Lopez.
The family moved to Pacific Grove in 1946, where he graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1954. He was the first of his family to graduate from college at University of California, Santa Barbara. Bob was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps. In 1956 he married his high school sweetheart, Jeanette Marie Heppner, and they had two children. He moved his family to Fresno and Clovis areas where he taught and coached for 38 years with Fresno Unified School District.
He was an outstanding athlete in high school and college. Bob remained active playing city recreational softball and basketball for many years. He enjoyed backpacking, hunting, fishing and all kinds of sports. He was a strong man of faith and an active and founding member of Northpark Community Church, which included serving on the board. His life priorities were faith, family and friends. As a Native American, he was also committed to his tribe, Elk Valley Rancheria. Upon retiring, he became a tribal council member.
Bob is survived by Jeanette, his bride of 60 years, his daughter Pamela Cook and her husband Kendall, grandson Robert Cook and his wife Elizabeth, granddaughter Amanda, his son Rick Lopez and his wife Karen, grandsons Josh and Matt, his brother Hal Lopez and his wife Carolyn, and his sister Arleen Hulsey.
Interment will be at 10 a.m. on Sept. 2, at the Elk Valley Cemetery on Howland Hill Rd. A celebration of life will follow at 11 a.m. at Elk Valley Rancheria in the Sam Lopez Community Center. Please bring a potluck dish. Call 707-464-4680 to RSVP.
