The Del Norte boys soccer team opened its 2017 season in Arcata on Wednesday, falling 4-0 to the Tigers.

Del Norte conceded one goal in the first half. Arcata was able to add another goal midway through the second half, but the turning point of the game came when the Tigers’ goalie was able to block a penalty kick from the Warriors that would have closed the gap to 2-1.

“We couldn’t reduce the deficit, and I think that kind of weakened our spirit and the floodgates kind of opened,” said Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu.

Although Sanyaolu though the Warriors played hard all game long, the young squad showed its inexperience at times.

“We didn’t do the basics right. The effort was good, but it wasn’t always the right effort so to speak,” Sanyaolu said. “We didn’t really pass the ball well, which interestingly is what we have worked on in practice. We just didn’t gel.”

Sanyaolu said Del Norte spent most of the game on the defensive, as the Warriors struggled to gain, and retain, possession throughout the game.

“We lost possession of the ball too easily and so we kept having to fight to get it back,” he said. “The opposition passed the ball better than we did today.”

The Del Norte boys soccer team will be back in action on Saturday, taking on McKinleyville on the road. The game is scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. The Warrior girls will take the field against the Panthers afterwards, at about 1 p.m.
