The Del Norte girls golf team opened its season on Thursday in Garberville at Benbow Golf and Country Club with the first Humboldt-Del Norte league meet of the season.

The Warriors had six girls attend the meet, four of whom were competing in their first-ever high school golf meet.

“Jayden and Elsie were our only returning players there, so I was pretty impressed with the other four girls,” said Del Norte head coach Sara Sampels. “It was their first time playing golf in a tournament and some of them first picked up a club last week. I was impressed with their grit and determination.”

Returning golfer, junior Jadyn Gorbet, led the team with a score of 147. Senior Carolyn Cochran and the Warriors’ other retuning player, sophomore Elsie Swiderski, were right behind Gorbet with 148 strokes apiece. Freshmen Natalie Dantzman shot a round of 155 followed by sophomore Emile Millhouse with a 156 and senior Abigail Pedroza with a 158.

“The girls all have great attitudes. At the end of the day they were exhausted, but they all said they can’t wait to do it again,” Sampels said. “Now that we have gotten in a better groove, I think we can get to the greens now. So we are going to start focusing on our chipping and putting next week so we can take a few strokes off on the greens.”

Although Del Norte was only able to take six girls to Garberville Thursday, the Warriors have their largest girls golf team in years with 10 players coming out early this season.

“They are all really dynamic girls,” Sampels said. “Some of them are involved in band, some of them are taking classes at College of the Redwoods, it is just a fun and smart group of girls.”

The Del Norte girls golf team is scheduled to be back in action at Baywood Golf and Country Club in Arcata on Thursday at noon.
