Del Norte High School’s varsity boys basketball team whipped Hoopa Valley High School on Wednesday in a 90-71 drubbing.
“It’s the most points we’ve ever scored since I’ve been coaching,” Lopez said of the away game. “We played extremely well in the first half. The score was 44-19 at halftime, so we played about as good as we could in the first half.”
Even though he’s happy with the outcome, Lopez said the team’s performance in the second half was a “major letdown, especially defensively.”
“Obviously we weren’t nearly as good in the second half as we were in the first half,” he said. “We shot the ball well, obviously, if we scored 90 points. … We’ve just got to learn to make sure we keep that intensity up throughout the whole game.”
Lopez said Del Norte’s win against Hoopa was a “total team effort,” adding that multiple players scored points. Starting next week, the basketball team will playing league games, he said.
“It gets real from now on,” Lopez said.
