Gallery of Arts and Culture

The Gallery of Arts and Culture at 175 H St., Crescent City, will feature work by local Yurok artist Richard Clark Dabbs, or “Dickie,” with a show 5 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Friday.

Dabbs’ work uses old growth redwood, acrylic paint, glass beads, elk antlers, sinew, deer hide, and other traditional Native American materials. The show includes a traditional tribal trunk, tribal masks, and dolls.

Coast Redwoods Art Association art competition

The public is invited to CRAA’s 2017 Juried Art Competition reception 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, where awards will be bestowed to artists entered in the show.

September’s demo will be led by Steve Washburn with his approach to landscapes in oils at noon Sept. 28 and will be preceded by a finger food potluck. Bring a dish to share and some friends.

Labor Day Weekend Celebration Art Show

There will be a reception for CRAA’s 2017 Labor Day Weekend Celebration Art Show for all artists and their guests 4 p.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday. The show will be open noon Saturday through 5 p.m.Sunday. Winners will be displayed at the gallery through Oct. 1. For more information call 707-460-1414.

The gallery has also expanded their reach to various locations throughout Crescent City. Friday is the last day to view Florence Keller originals in the main hallway of Sutter Coast Hospital at 800 E. Washington Blvd., Crescent City.

Wild Rivers Community Foundation at 900 Front St., Crescent City, will display originals by Carol Long through Oct. 1.

Become a member of the gallery and spend 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Saturday painting and networking. Art classes for children take place on Saturday mornings.

North Coast Youth Choir auditions

Students ages 10-16 are invited to the 2017 fall auditions for Pacific Music Guild’s North Coast Youth Choir 3 p.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 9 and Sept. 10 at the United Methodist Church at 664 H St., Crescent City. Singers do not need a prepared piece.

Ken Waldman, poet & fiddler

Traveling from Alaska, Ken Waldman is a fiddler with nine CDs and a writer with nine books. A collaboration of Del Norte Reads, Poets & Writers, and Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness brings his talent to Crescent City for two free events.

A creative writing workshop begins 5:15 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Del Norte Reads office, 1080 Mason Mall, Suite 9. Then at 7 p.m. at the Del Norte County Library, 190 Price Mall, Ken will perform with Appalachian-style string-band music and original poetry combined with Alaska-set storytelling.

Rockin’ 2017

The Del Norte Child Care Council presents their fourth annual Rockin’ fundraiser at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds 1 p.m. Sept. 16.

Live music includes Steve Berg, The Chanterelles, True North, and Frankie Hernandez with event emcees the Downtown Divas. Local beer, wine, food, and art vendors will also be there.

Tickets are available at the Del Norte Child Care Council, 212 K St., Crescent City: $12 for adults, $6 for children 7-17, and free for children under 6. A family pass for four is $30.

Music in the Redwoods

Music in the Redwoods announces its 2017-18 concert season: Pavlo, Mediterranean guitar and band Sept. 17; Neave Trio, classical piano Nov. 17; Two on Tap, classic song and dance Jan. 6; and Duo Baldo, classical and comical piano and violin April 22.

Season tickets are available for $50 and grant admission to all four concerts. Individual concerts are $20. Children receive free admission.

North Coast Redwoods Writers’ Conference

The 17th annual North Coast Redwoods Writers’ Conference is Sept. 22-23 at College of the Redwoods, Del Norte, 883 W. Washington Blvd., Crescent City. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 22, there is a panel discussion and readings by Caroline Gill, Roy Parvin, and Ken Letko. The event is open to the public.

Beginning at 8:15 a.m. Sept. 23, the conference holds 10 workshops with five notable authors and includes continental breakfast and a hot catered lunch. The day concludes with an open mic session for aspiring writers.

Juried Photography Show

Artists are invited to enter CRAA’s 2017 Juried Photography Show.

Photographers may enter up to four ready-to-hang works, excepting computer generated pictures. Non refundable entry fees are $20 per piece. Completed entry forms and fees must be received at the gallery, 1228 2nd St., Crescent City, by Sept. 22 and work must be delivered to the Cultural Center, 1001 Front St., Crescent City, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. on Sept. 29.

The show is Oct. 1-8. Monetary awards will be presented at a reception 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Cultural Center.

Art in Public Places

DNACA’s Art in Public Places show is a collaboration with the Harrington House entitled “Third Eye Open: Beyond the Siren’s Song,” a collection of paintings by Dianne Renee Shilling.

The exhibit is at Del Norte County Courthouse and will be available for viewing through Sept. 28. The courthouse is at 450 H St., Crescent City, and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays except for state holidays.
