North Coast Redwoods Writers’ Conference
The 17th annual North Coast Redwoods Writers’ Conference will take place Friday and Saturday at College of the Redwoods, Del Norte, 883 W Washington Blvd. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday will be a panel discussion and readings by Caroline Gill, Roy Parvin, and Ken Letko. Friday’s event is open to the public.
Beginning at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, the conference will hold nine workshops with five notable authors and includes continental breakfast and a hot catered lunch. The day concludes with an open mic session for aspiring writers.

Arts for Veterans Drums, Guitar, Drawing, and Tickets
The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness invites veterans and their families to join us for another hour-long drum circle 4 p.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 30 at the VFW Hall at 810 H St. Hosted by Mombo Hernandez, hand drums and percussion instruments will be provided.
A new 12-week course of guitar workshops with Dale Morgan will begin 5:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Fireside Room of the VFW Hall.
A six-week drawing class taught by Sara Dee Broderick will also be starting 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Del Norte Senior Center, 1765 Northcrest Dr.
All workshops are free. A limited quantity of complimentary season tickets for veterans who self-identify as disabled and their family members are also still available.

Music in the Redwoods
Music in the Redwoods 2017-18 concert season tickets are still available for discounted admission to the remaining three performances: Neave Trio, classical piano Nov. 17; Two on Tap, classic song and dance Jan. 6; and Duo Baldo, classical and comical piano and violin April 22.

Crescent Harbor Gallery
Coast Redwoods Art Association’s Crescent Harbor Gallery will be showcasing their annual juried art competition for the month of September.
September’s demo will be led by Steve Washburn with his approach to landscapes in oils noon Sept. 28 and will be preceded by a finger food potluck. Bring a dish to share and some friends. Their fall luncheon will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 21. Every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. is Paint and Play day for children. For more information, call 707-464-9133.
Art in Public Places
DNACA’s Art in Public Places show is a collaboration with the Harrington House titled “Third Eye Open: Beyond the Siren’s Song,” a collection of paintings by Dianne Renee Shilling. The exhibit is in the Del Norte County Courthouse and will be available for viewing through Sept. 28.
The next show will be “Stories We Could Tell: Drawings, Paintings and Book Illustrations” by Marcia Voelker. The courthouse is at 450 H St., Crescent City, and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays except for state holidays. For more information, call DNACA at 707-464-1336.
California Redwoods Art Association
California Redwoods Art Association’s 2nd St Gallery will showcase the winners of their Labor Day Weekend Celebration Art Show for the month of September. Wild Rivers Community Foundation at 900 Front St. will also be displaying originals by Carol Long through Oct. 1.
Become a member of the gallery and spend Saturday afternoons painting and networking 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Art classes for children take place on Saturday mornings. Juried Photography Show
Artists are invited to enter 2nd St Gallery’s 2017 Juried Photography Show. Photographers may enter up to four ready-to-hang works, excepting computer generated pictures.
Nonrefundable entry fees are $20 per piece. Completed entry forms and fees must be received at the Gallery at 1228 2nd St by Friday and work must be delivered to the Cultural Center, 1001 Front St., from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 29.

Friends of Music
Brookings Harbor Friends of Music opens their 33rd season on Sunday with Andreas Klein, a distinguished pianist.
Their upcoming lineup includes: Mayuko Kamio, an award-winning violinist, Nov. 12; Zivian Tomkins Duo, a returning favorite now performing with violinist Axel Strauss, Jan. 14; Nordic Voices, an a cappella group from Scandinavia, Feb. 11; The Minetti Quartet, a string ensemble from Austria, March 4; and the Rastrelli Cello Quartet, an outfit dedicated to performing between the genres, April 15.
The season concludes May 20 with Friends of Music’s annual Scholarship concert, free to all, teaming up with Alexander Tutunov, a professor of piano at Southern Oregon University, to highlight young artists selected as scholarship winners.
All concerts take place at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 102 Park Ave., Brookings. Season tickets for all seven performances are $100 and individual concert tickets are $20. Students under age 18 receive free admission.
