Building Healthy Communities will celebrate the launch of a book Bay Area News Group health and science journalist Suzanne Bohan that chronicles the efforts of the California Endowment to improve the lives of residents living in 14 communities, including those in Del Norte County.
The book launch will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday as part of Live From Downtown: It’s First Friday in Downtown Crescent City, according to a BHC press release.
Bohan’s book, “Twenty Years of Life”, examines how living in a poor neighborhood, with sub-par schools, lack of parks, fear of violence, few to no healthy food options and the stress of unpaid bills is taking years of people’s lives, according to the press release. Residents living in distressed communities die 20 years earlier than those living in wealthier communities often a few miles away, according to the release.
Bohan’s book also focuses on how the passage of more than 500 new policies and laws have improved the lives of millions of residents, according to the BHC press release. The Building Healthy Communities initiative has been active in Del Norte County and on tribal land for about eight years. The 10-year initiative focuses on 14 communities and builds the capacity of residents to create change, according to the press release.
