Chetco Pelican Players present “Thumbelina”
This year’s Youth Production by Chetco Pelican Players is an adaptation of the revered tale of “Thumbelina” by Hans Christian Andersen. Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chetco Playhouse, 1240 Chetco Ave., Brookings.

Lighthouse Quilt Guild Quilt Show 2018
The Lighthouse Quilt Guild will host their annual Quilt Show 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 18 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds in Crescent City.
This year the theme is Color Explosion and will include vendors, door prizes, a judged quilt show and more. Admission is a requested $3 donation. For more information, call 707-458-3008.
Crescent Harbor Gallery activities
Coast Redwoods Art Association’s Crescent Harbor Gallery, 140 Marine Way, Artist of the Month for August is Debbie Dean with a collection of her paintings.
August’s demo will be led by local muralists on Aug. 23, preceded by a potluck.
The prospectus for the Gallery’s Annual National Juried Art Show, which will be on display Sept. 1-30 with a reception 6 p.m.-8 p.m. on Sept. 1, is now available. Each entry is $20 with a maximum of three per artist and monetary awards will be given.
All two-dimensional media is eligible. They are also displaying artwork at the Del Norte County Library; BJ Clausen and Pauline Lodolini will showcase through September.
Saturdays at the gallery include a papier maché program at 1 p.m. Mondays 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. offers a space and good company for artists and crafters.

Brian Scott Gallery
Artists of the Month for August at Brian Scott Gallery, 515 Chetco Ave., Brookings, are Kay and Chuck Myer, displaying her watercolors and his photography.
The Gallery showcases 25 other artists in ongoing events on a monthly basis and hosts Brown Bag Thursday from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. with live music and discussion about artists in history. 2nd St Gallery
California Redwoods Art Association’s 2nd St Gallery, 1228 2nd St, Artist of the Month for August is Andrea Mastrangelo with a collection of her sculptures.
The Gallery is also displaying members’ collections throughout the community, including: the Del Norte County Library with Linda Elmore; Sutter Coast Hospital with fourteen different artists; and Wild Rivers Community Foundation with Dawn Philips.
Spirits in Clay classes for children are 10 a.m.-noon Wednesdays, Aug. 8-August 22. These are free of charge thanks to a grant from the Wild Rivers Community Foundation.
Every Wednesday noon-2 p.m. local artist Carol Long teaches oil painting class at the Gallery. Registration is required for all classes.
Become a member of the Gallery and spend Saturday painting and networking 1 p.m.-3 p.m. The prospectus is now available for their Labor Day Juried Art Show, “Past, Present, and Future” as well as their first Juried Teen Art Show, both of which will hang in the Cultural Center 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 1-3.
Each artist may enter up to three original pieces of art and there are three categories: two-dimensional paintings, three-dimensional sculptures, and three-dimensional pottery, jewelry, woodwork, or fabric/textiles. For more information, call 707-460-1414.
DNACA’s 36th Performance Series pre-sale tickets
The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness will have limited quantities of pre-sale season tickets available before its 2018-19 season lineup is announced Aug. 13. Pre-sale season tickets provide not only a discount to the five individual performances, but also to regular season tickets. Just like regular season tickets, they are transferable and will be replaced if lost. They are available in Crescent City at Del Norte Office Supply, 240 I St., and in Brookings at Wright’s Custom Framing, 810 Chetco Ave.

Art in Public Places Reception
The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness’ Art in Public Places exhibit is titled “Art by Veterans,” a collection of artwork created by students in DNACA’s Arts for Veterans program, funded, in part, by Veterans in the Arts, a program of the California Arts Council, a state agency. The exhibit will be up through Aug. 9. The public is invited to a reception 5 p.m.-6 p.m. that evening honoring the artists and will include finger foods and live entertainment from students in Dale Morgan’s Arts for Veterans guitar workshop.
DNACA’s Art in Public Places exhibits are available for viewing in the Del Norte County Courthouse, 450 H St., Crescent City. The courthouse is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays except for state holidays. For more information, call DNACA at 707-464-1336.
Manley Art Center and Gallery
The Manley Art Center and Gallery, 433 Oak St., in Brookings will display a collection of work by Sharon Guy titled “Homage to the Gee’s Bend Quilters,” a multi-media show, through Aug. 28. She will give a presentation on her inspiration 4 p.m. Aug. 14 during Brookings Art Walk.
The Gallery is open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Children of all ages are invited to the center from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays to see work created by member artists and work in the classroom. For more information, call 541-469-1807.
Art in Corrections reading
The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness invites the public to a free-of-charge reception for the publishing of the creative writing work, “My Brother’s Keeper,” written by students in the Arts in Corrections program at Pelican Bay State Prison, a program of the William James Association and partnership with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the California Arts Council.
Teaching artist Cecelia Holland will read an excerpt from the story “Live with What You Did” and provide a question and answer session at 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Del Norte County Library, 190 Price Mall.
