Poetry Out Loud

The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness invites the public to the first Del Norte High School-Wide Competition at 6 p.m. Friday in the Del Norte High Library at 1301 El Dorado St. in Crescent City.

The public is also invited to the first Sunset High School-Wide Poetry Out Loud Competition at 11 a.m. Jan. 17 in Sunset’s MPR at 2500 Elk Valley Cross Road. The first County-Wide Poetry Out Loud Competition will also be open to the public at 6 p.m. Feb. 8 at the College of the Redwoods, Del Norte campus, 883 W. Washington Blvd., Crescent City.

Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, giving participating students the opportunity to receive scholarships and recognition for their work. Arts for Veterans

The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness is offering a new course of creative writing with teaching artist Sharon McKinney 1 p.m.-3 p.m. every Saturday from Jan. 12 through March 2 at the Del Norte Senior Center at 1765 Northcrest Drive.

We will also host the next drum circle with local musician Mombo Hernandez 4 p.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the VFW Hall. Hand drums and percussion instruments will be provided. All workshops are free-of-charge to veterans and their family members and families are eligible whether or not the veteran participates.

Brian Scott Gallery

Brian Scott Gallery, 515 Chetco Ave., Brookings, is featuring oil paintings by Linda Evans, an accomplished artist in oils and pastels, for the month of January.

Their Winter Warmer Series will be hosted 4 p.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday featuring Linda’s work, live keyboard music provided by Craig Evans, and refreshments. The gallery invites you to network while enjoying coffee, tea, and an ocean view on their patio for Brown Bag Thursday 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. each week with live music and local artist Pete Chasar talking about all things art. California Redwoods Art Association

California Redwoods Art Association’s 2nd St Gallery, 1228 2nd St, will exhibit a collection of photography from January’s Artist of the Month, Dawn Phillips.

The gallery is also displaying members’ collections throughout the community, including: Sutter Coast Hospital and their Infusion Center, Vita Cucina, and Wild Rivers Community Foundation.

Every Wednesday noon-2 p.m. local artist Carol Long teaches oil painting class and 2 p.m.-3 p.m. Jenny Rosa teaches ukulele at the gallery. Both are free-of charge.

On Saturdays, a watercolor workshop will take place 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m. with no fee, but students must supply their own materials. Registration is required for all classes. Become a member of the gallery and spend Saturday afternoons painting and networking from 1-3. Their next Second Sunday Hootenanny singalong will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday. Friends of Music

Brookings Harbor Friends of Music continues their 34th season with Dashon Burton, bass-baritone vocalist, at 3 p.m. on Sunday (corrected from misprint).

Other concerts in their series include: cellist Nicholas Canellakis and pianist-composer Michael Brown on Feb. 10; Thomas Pandolfi, American pianist, on April 7; and the Minguet Quartet, Classical-Romantic strings, on April 28. The season concludes with their annual Scholarship concert, free to the public, on May 19 with Alexander Tutanov, professor of piano at Southern Oregon University, and will feature the young artists selected as scholarship recipients.

All performances take place at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 102 Park Ave., Brookings, and begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at Wright’s Custom Framing, 810 Chetco Ave., at the door. DNACA’s 27th Annual Juried Multimedia Show Reception

The public is invited to join the Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness in honoring the participating artists of its 27th Annual Juried Multimedia Show. Art in Public Places

The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness’ Art in Public Places exhibit is our 27th Annual Juried Multimedia Show. This exhibit will be on display through Jan. 17. DNACA’s Art in Public Places exhibits are available for viewing in the Del Norte County Courthouse at 450 H St., Crescent City. The courthouse is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays except for state holidays. There will soon be an Art in Public Places exhibit in the new terminal of CEC airport at 150 Dale Rupert Road. Del Norte High School Dance Concert

The students of Del Norte High School’s dance classes present “Strike a Pose,” a winter dance concert, 7 p.m. Jan. 18 and Jan. 19 in Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G St., Crescent City.

Tickets for general admission are $8 pre-sale or $10 at the door, students and senior citizens are $5, children 6-12 are $3, and children 5 and under are free. Tickets are available at Del Norte Office Supply at 240 I Street and at the door.

Verlene Schermer Harp Concert

The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness and local harper Jerry Bauer present a concert featuring Verlene Schermer, a musician from the Bay Area, on the Celtic harp, guitar, piano, and voice and Linnette Bommarito on flutes and vocal harmonies.

This is a separate event from our regular performance series and will take place 7 p.m., Jan. 18 at the United Methodist Church, 664 H St., Crescent City. Crescent Harbor Gallery

Coast Redwoods Art Association’s Crescent Harbor Gallery, 140 Marine Way, will display a collection of multimedia artwork by their Artist of the Month for January, Pauline Lodolini.

January’s demo will be led by Pauline Holmes in acrylic paint noon Jan. 24, preceded by a potluck. Saturdays at the gallery include a papier maché program 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Sundays include a still-life drawing group 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Mondays from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. offers a space and good company for artists and crafters. Annual PACKY Awards Gala

The Chetco Pelican Players will host their Annual PACKY Awards Gala at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26 at The Chetco Playhouse, 1240 Chetco Ave., Brookings, to celebrate the 2018 season, looking back on shows from the year, catching a glimpse of upcoming shows, and recognizing everyone’s hard work.

Admission is $10 for adults and free for kids. Complimentary champagne and hors d’oeuvres graciously provided by Claire Willard and Lon Goddard.


The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness continues its 36th season 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G St., with Audiopharmacy, indigenous-led reggae with soulful poetics, turntables, and live instrumentation.

Music in the Redwoods

Music in the Redwoods continues its 2018-19 concert season 7 p.m. Feb. 4 with Frisson Ensemble, a six-piece classical group ranging from Beethoven to Celtic.

Their season finale concert will be Pop! Go the Classics, classical music in a pop format 7 p.m. March 8.

All concerts take place at Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G St., Crescent City. Individual tickets are $20 and children receive free admission. Gallery of Arts and Culture

The Gallery of Arts and Culture, 175 H St., is featuring the show “Art Safari,” benefiting the Smith River Alliance as well as the artists.

The show includes watercolor and acrylic works created by artists Rick Tolley, John Crater, Andrew Daneil, Paul Rickard, and Jeff Stanley. They spent the past two months painting in plein air along the Smith River from Myrtle Beach to Goose Creek while being hosted at Rock Creek Ranch. The Gallery is open 11a.m-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Manley Art Center and Gallery

The Manley Art Center and Gallery, 433 Oak St., Brookings, will be closed Jan. 1-14 for maintenance.

The Gallery is regularly open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Children of all ages are invited to the Center from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays to see work created by member artists and work in the classroom. For more information, call 541-469-1807.
