Fifth-graders Aurora Mitchell and Adrianna Haapala of Mary Peacock and Bess Maxwell elementary schools placed first and second in a drug awareness poster contest hosted by the Crescent City Elks Lodge.

Aurora and Adrianna received medallions from Elks Lodge Exalted Ruler Pat Bailey and Leading Knight Kevin Woodward at a recent dinner. Their entries have been submitted for judging and consideration in higher level campaigns, according to a press release from the Elks Lodge.

Part of a nationwide contest, Del Norte County third- through fifth-graders were asked to create a poster based on the theme “Drugs Take Away...” Winning entries can move from the local contest to competitions at the district, state and national levels, according to the press release.

National finalists will have their posters included in a drug awareness coloring book, which will be distributed nationwide as part of the Elks Drug Awareness and Education program, according to the press release.
