The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA) continues its 36th Performance Series 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G St, with Audiopharmacy, an indigenous-led reggae band who uses globally-infused hip-hop to inspire social change.

Attendees can expect to be treated to thoughtful lyrics woven throughout original reggae compositions. Live guitar, saxophone, percussion and keyboard are accompanied by turntable and beatboxing performed by Teao Sense and gorgeous vocals provided by Desirae Harp and Ras. Their rhythms oscillate between upbeat and danceable to soulful and soothing.

Founded in the year 2000 by multi-instrumentalist, producer, and turntablist Teao Sense, the ensemble is strongly rooted in community. Their music combines indigenous traditions, conscious hip-hop, soulful poetics, and technical lyricism with global music genres, live instrumentation, turntablism, and electronics. Their work has a wide appeal, drawing on diverse musical genres with inspiration from all corners of the earth to reflect on humanity’s struggles and triumphs in order to cultivate insight and consciousness.

The ensemble has collaborated and shared stages with many talented contemporary musicians including: Bruno Mars, Bomba Estereo, Kaytranada, Dead Prez, Dancing Earth, and Blackalicious, to name a few.

The Audiopharmacy Live Ensemble is a portion of the Audiopharmacy Prescriptions International Artivist Collective, a culturally diverse grassroots collective and independent record label. The Collective was founded in 2001 after the band expanded to include live painters, dancers, activists, poets, journalists, illustrators, graphic designers, photographers, filmmakers, educators, event producers, and natural medicine practitioners. The vision of the Artivist Collective is to unify communities throughout the world through cross-cultural exchanges using art, media, and education. They believe in the power of love, collaboration, and socially-conscious artistic offerings to support the healing and harmony of all beings.

On March 19, 2013, the band received a mayoral proclamation from the city and county of San Francisco for artistic excellence, the promotion of cross-cultural understanding abroad, and representing the values of the San Francisco Bay Area. Members of Audiopharmacy have toured four continents as musicians and cultural ambassadors bringing workshops, live music, and intimate jam sessions to foster cross-cultural cooperation.

An engagement activity will be taught by members of Audiopharmacy the morning of Jan. 31 at Margaret Keating Elementary School in Klamath. Their program will include a mini-performance for the students followed by break-out sessions focusing on songwriting with an emphasis on the students’ lived experiences.

Tickets for the concert are available in Crescent City at Del Norte Office Supply, 240 I St., and in Brookings at Wright’s Custom Framing, 810 Chetco Ave., or online at Tickets will also be available at the door, which opens at 6:15 p.m. Jan. 31.
