Del Norte kicked off its 2018 season with a strong all around team performance on Monday, shooting a combined score of 336 to take first place as a team in Fortuna at the first Humboldt-Del Norte boys golf meet of the year.

Although Del Norte finished with the lowest team scores of the day, senior Taylor Westbrook said scores were up across the board due to some tricky conditions in the first meet of the year.

“Fortuna got about a half inch of rain last night, so that made it pretty wet and soggy out there,” Westbrook said. “Of course, with it being a country club, the greens were rolling pretty fast. The other thing that had scores a little high today was the wind — it was blowing about 30 or 40 miles per hour.”

The Warriors were led by a trio of golfers that were among the best individual scores of the day. Senior Cameron Schultz, who won the HDN individual championship last year, paced Del Norte with a round of 79 to finish in third place overall.

Eureka’s Matt Dusi shot the lowest score of the day with a 76, followed by St. Bernard’s Josh Holmes with 78. Holmes was the runner-up in the HDN last year.

“The team did well overall,” Westbrook said. “Cameron kind of struggled today, but he was still right in the mix with how the conditions were.”

Westbrook, who also cracked the top five in last year’s individual standings, finished in a tie for fourth place with teammate Ben Slayton with rounds of 80 strokes apiece.

“I was amazed with Ben’s score of 80,” Westbrook said. “He has been hitting the ball pretty good, but it is a tough course. Getting a score of 80 is great because it helps us get a good score in for the team rankings. For the first tournament of the year playing at Redwood, which is the toughest course that we will play in league all year, the scores that we had were pretty darn good as a team.”

Brennan Thornton wrapped up the day with a score of 97 overall to round out the team scoring for Del Norte.

Freshman Clyde Preston also competed for Del Norte. Westbrook said Preston finished with a score of 112 in his first time playing a full 18 holes. Anthony Slayton rounded out the day for the Warriors with a score of 113. Slayton joined the golf team late this spring after moving up to the varsity basketball team for the postseason this winter.

Del Norte’s team score of 336 put it four strokes ahead of Eureka. St. Bernard’s came in third overall with 367 total strokes, followed by McKinleyville with 381 and Arcata with 391.

Del Norte will be back in action next Thursday at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
