The Humboldt-Del Norte boys golf teams finally had some near perfect conditions for its second league meet of the season at Beau Pre Golf Course. Del Norte was able to take advantage with a first place team finish by 16 strokes to extend its lead in the season standings.

“It was nice,” said Del Norte junior Brendan Thornton. “The weather was beautiful, it was a sunny day, it was a good day for golf.”

Del Norte was lead by its senior duo of Cameron Schultz and Taylor Westbrook, who took second and third place overall with rounds of 78 and 79 respectively.

Schultz won the HDN individual championship last spring, making it the fifth time in a row that the award has gone to a Warrior, but Westbrook edged out Schultz for first place in the junior division of the Del Norte Men’s Club Championships last summer.

Both of the Warriors top golfers finished behind St. Bernard’s Josh Holmes, who finished second in the HDN individual standings last season. Holmes shot a round of 72 at Beau Pre. Schultz and Westbrook were able to catch up to Matt Dusi of Eureka, who took first place overall at the first meet of the season at Redwood Country Club last week.

Thornton came in third overall for Del Norte, with a round of 86, followed closely by Ben Slayton’s score of 87.

Anthony Slayton shot a 115 in McKinleyville and Clyde Preston rounded out the day for Del Norte with a round of 125.

“It sounds like we all feel pretty good about how we played,” Thornton said. “We went from last week where it windy and hard to play to today where it was just nice.’

Del Norte finished in first place as a team in the first meet of the year, but expanded that advantage in the season standings over second place Eureka considerably — from a six point lead up to 22 points.

The Warriors are currently 58 strokes ahead of third-place St. Bernard’s and 62 strokes in front of McKinleyville.

“We started the first tournament a little rough and were only in the leady by four strokes, but we came back and we are up by more now,” Thornton said. “We just have to keep practicing, get better and better, and win more tournaments.”

Del Norte will be back in action on Tuesday with its longest road trip of the regular season at Benbow Golf Course for the third Humboldt-Del Norte League meet of the year.
