A wanted subject remained on the loose in the hills about 18 miles from the coast following a high speed chase Wednesday that started near Smith River and ended in the hills past Altaville on Rowdy Creek Road.
According to dispatch reports, the pursuit began just before 3 p.m.
Del Norte County Sheriff’s Commander Bill Steven said deputies observed Nolan Travis, 26, driving a silver BMW in Smith River and knew he had a warrant for his arrest. When deputies attempted to stop Travis, a pursuit ensued, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph on U.S. 101 before he turned onto Rowdy Creek Road.
Steven said deputies had to search a particular area of the pursuit route after deputies observed something being thrown from the car window.
Steven said officers were able to stop the car about 18 miles inland near Major Moore’s, and detained passenger Bonnie Steele, 39, of Crescent City, at gunpoint. Travis was said to have fled into the bushes, eluding officers.
Steven said Travis was wanted for parole violation and had been previously sentenced to four years in prison on drug charges.
Steven said Steele is known to local law enforcement. In 2017, she was sentenced to two years in prison and fined $1,190 for assault with a semi-automatic firearm.
According to Steven, the BMW was last registered in Central Point, Oregon, but had not been reported stolen.
Steele was being booked into county jail at press time, for resisting or obstructing officers. Steven said more charges could be added after deputies search the car and locate the item tossed from the car.
At last report, a state parks unit had been brought to the scene with a K9 to assist at about 4 p.m. but could not pick up a scent to follow. Authorities continued to search.
Steven said the area is about five miles from the nearest campground and campers were made aware of the situation.
Travis is described asa white male adult, 5’8” tall, 150 pounds, but no clothing description could be provided.
Anyone who sees Travis or has information should call sheriff’s dispatch at 707-464-4191.
