With Veterans Day around the corner, an update was given to the City Council Nov. 5 by Kelly Schellong as to the status of the Point of Honor Monument at the corner of Front Street and U.S. 101.

“As you can see, we have made a tremendous amount of progress,” she said, noting that an order of 175 custom made bricks has been shipped and are on the way. Also en route are 7-foot granite obelisks representing each branch of the military.

“Those will be arriving in Oakland this week, and we have a local person, a truck driving company to donate his time and Recology of Del Norte has donated the fuel costs to truck those up here to Crescent City.” She said it’s hoped that the obelisks can be placed before winter weather sets in. Memorial benches will be installed, and the committee will resume working on the final landscape plan and permitting with the city. To donate, checks should be made payable to the Del Norte Veterans Memorial Monument Committee. For more information, call 707-218-5060.
