A Crescent City man died at the scene and a second died in the hospital following a two-vehicle collision Sunday afternoon on U.S. 101 near Mill Creek Campground.
According to California Highway Patrol reports, a northbound Saturn passenger car crossed into the opposing lane near mile marker 18.99 and collided with a southbound Winnebago motor home.
A passenger in the Saturn, Jose Ramirez, 60, of Crescent City, was pronounced dead at the scene. Del Norte Sheriff’s Office Commander Bill Steven said another passenger, Rubi Lopez-Gonzalez, 18, died later at a Redding hospital.
Driver Miguelina Gonzalez, 45, sustained major injuries, and a male juvenile sustained moderate injuries, according to CHP.
The driver of the Winnebago, Paul Peeples, 60, and passenger Justine Rudi Castro, 29, both of McKinleyville, sustained minor injuries. According to CHP, all parties were wearing their safety belts and the weather was rainy at the time of the crash. The highway was closed for about an hour and the crash remains under investigation.
Other local crashes
Two more crashes on Dec. 8 caused minor injuries. According to Gonzalez, the first occurred on U.S. 101 at mile marker 16. She said a solo vehicle was northbound in the rain when, for unknown reasons, it left the roadway and struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle complained of pain but had no other injuries.
The second occurred on U.S. 199 at mile marker 20.5. A solo eastbound vehicle left the roadway and hit an embankment at about 10:40 p.m. Gonzalez said the driver sustained minor lacerations to the face.
