The cause of a fire Friday at the former Crescent City landfill Friday night remains undetermined but officials are calling it suspicious.

Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority Director Tedd Ward said in an email that he personally went to the area after seeing smoke at about 6:25 p.m.

Ward coordinated with responding fire personnel to unlock gates into the area. Once inside, they found a grass fire and a burning track loader the county roads department had left on the site.

The fire was extinguished and Ward returned to inspect the site the following morning. He said some of the drains, pipes and gas valves on the site had been damaged or burned.

Crescent City Fire Chief Steve Wakefield called it suspicious, saying it looked as if the fire started at the tractor and spread to the grass, burning about 5.7 acres.
