The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office released the names of the suspect and victim connected with a fatal stabbing Thursday in Orick, California.
Ronalad Joshua Loureiro, 29, was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional
Facility on charges of homicide and a parole hold, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Authorities identified the victim as 34-year-old Vernon James Weatherford. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, according to the news release.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a call just after 11 a.m. near U.S. 101 and Dryden’s Road for a male stabbing victim. The suspect reportedly fled the scene southbound, although he was later detained by a California Highway Patrol officer on Hansen Street in Orick.
Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies are confident only one other person was involved in the stabbing, public information officer Samantha Karges told the Triplicate newspaper in Crescent City. Karges said this was the second homicide in Humboldt County since the new year began Monday.
Officers with California State Parks and the California Highway Patrol assisted in the response. State Park officers performed life-saving efforts on the victim while medical personnel were en route, however Weatherford later succumbed to his injuries.
