A Crescent City family was displaced Tuesday afternoon when their Cummins Road home was destroyed by fire.

According to Crescent City Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Ray Rook, firefighters arrived at 481 Cummins Road just after the 3:22 p.m. call to see flames coming from the windows and doors of the single-story home.

Firefighters remained on the scene until about 8:30 p.m., due to complexities in construction, access and firefighter safety, Rook said.

“It took a while but no one was hurt and we were able to save some property,” Rook said. One resident was taken to Sutter Coast Hospital for evaluation, he said.

Asked about the cause of the Fire Rook said preliminary investigations point toward electrical.

“In the front area, we were able to pinpoint an electrical appliance, but a full investigation would be needed to confirm that,” he said.

Crescent City Fire and Rescue responded with two fire engines, two water tenders and 22 firefighters. Engines from Fort Dick Fire and Pelican Bay State Prison assisted, and another Fort Dick engine and four personnel covered the Crescent City Fire station.

Rook asked that residents in more remote areas of the county display their address numbers clearly at the end of driveways or access roads, so that emergency personnel can find them.

“If we can’t see the address, we can’t come to help,” he said.

Help for the family

Michelle Lynn Bowdish posted on the Triplicate’s Facebook page that she and her five children lost everything, including their pets, in the fire. She noted that she is working with fire officials to involve the Red Cross.

Red Cross Coordinator Mary Dorman said Tuesday, that she was only aware of the Facebook posts. She said typically, the responding fire agency contacts the Red Cross when a fire displaces a family or a destroyed home in uninsured.

She said the Red Cross is currently not asking for donations for Bowdish’s family, but is accepting donations for future emergencies.

Bowdish could not be contacted as of press time, but a follow-up report is pending. A donation page has been set up at class="Apple-converted-space">
