A high speed chase around noon Monday led to the recovery of a stolen truck north of Crescent City.

CHP Information Officer Brandy Gonzalez said the chase started when on officer observed a Ford F-350 truck on Lake Earl Drive near Standard Veneer Road that matched the description of a truck stolen in Brookings. The driver failed to yield to police and a pursuit ensued, Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said the pursuit reached speeds of up to 90 mph before the vehicle’s tires were blown out with two sets of spike strips on King’s Valley Road.

The pursuit came to a stop off Elk Valley Cross Road near Highway 199.

The driver of the truck, Brett Carpenter, 37, of Coos Bay, surrendered without a struggle and was taken into custody without incident, Gonzalez said. The truck was towed and taken to storage.

According to the county jail booking log, he was arrested for vehicle theft, evading an officer, and larceny. His bail was set at $75,000.
