Crews cleared out Friday after removing remains of the former pink hotel in the center of Smith River. Debris had been there a year, since a fire destroyed it and two neighboring buildings in 2017.
Community Development Department Director Heidi Kunstal said the contractor, Cal Inc., of Vacaville, put the debris in separate containers before trucking it away. Hazardous materials were placed in a lined container to be taken to a specified landfill in Vacaville for disposal and non-hazardous materials were taken to Del Norte County Transfer Station.
Kunstal said the next step will be a cost recovery hearing, which has not been set. At that time, property owner Saffan Panahi will be notified, but the process has not started yet, said Kunstal.
