Two unidentified climbers found themselves in cold water Monday morning after falling into the Pacific off Preston Island.

According to Del Norte County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Steven, a male adult and a female adult were climbing on the rocks when the female lost footing and fell into the water. The male subject went into the water after her and got her to safety, but was then unable to get out of the water himself.

Crescent City Fire and Rescue, along with sheriff’s Search and Rescue Cmdr. Ed Fleshman arrived just after 11:30 a.m.

Steven said Fleschman brought ropes and Brett Stone, owner of Stone Roofing, volunteered to be lowered down to help the male out of the water. Once Stone had the male secured, several citizen volunteers teamed up to pull the two up from the water, Steven said.

The female was uninjured, but the male was taken to the hospital for treatment of various injuries.
