The dirt road to Gold Bluffs Beach and Fern Canyon will be closed four days a week through Oct. 11 for a major improvement project.
Redwood National and State Parks officials will close the gates to Davison Road starting at 6 p.m. Sundays, reopening at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, according to a parks press release. The Gold Bluffs Beach Campground and Fern Canyon day use parking lot will also be closed, according to the release.
Popular destinations within the parks, visitation at the campground and Fern Canyon has been steadily increasing every year. But Davison Road, which winds nine miles west from U.S. 101, was not originally designed for the heavy traffic, according to the press release. Closing the dirt road will allow for safe operation of dump trucks and heavy equipment for grading, graveling and resurfacing work without endangering other travelers, according to the release.
Rain may extend the length of the project, according to the release.
The road, campground and day use area will reopen to the public Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, according to the press release. Campers with reservations on Thursday nights will be able to check in after 5 p.m.
The Streelow Creek hiking and biking trail will be open to Davison Road and back, but there will be no access to Fern Canyon, according to the press release.
