Agencies from around the county were geared up and ready to rescue a hiker stuck on a cliff top near the Nickel Creek Trail but it was a Coast Guard helicopter that saved the day.

About 5 p.m. Wednesday, Del Norte County Search and Rescue personnel were summoned to the trail south of Enderts Beach overlook for a report that a hiker was on a cliff top with the ground giving way below. Crescent City Fire and Rescue, CAL FIRE, National and State Parks and sheriff’s department personnel scanned the horizons from the Enderts Beach Overlook parking area and located the hiker sitting on a cliff top about .75 miles away. At that time, personnel were told the hiker was unhurt and in good health.

The Coast Guard helicopter arrived about 30 minutes after being called and coordinated with personnel on the ground to locate the hiker. A Coast Guard crewman was lowered from the helicopter to snatch the hiker from the cliff top and lower him to the beach below where he was led back out by National and State Parks personnel. The name of the hiker was not available as of press time.
