California Highway Patrol officers are continuing their search for the male driver of a stolen car who escaped pursuit on foot Monday morning.
According to CHP Sgt. John Crouch, officers observed a speeding Honda Accord southbound on U.S.199, near Gasquet. When a traffic stop was attempted, the vehicle failed to yield to the officers and a pursuit began, Crouch said.
The vehicle turned onto California 197 and eventually into Ruby Van Deventer Park, where occupants fled on foot.
Crouch said a female was caught and arrested but her identity has not yet been determined.
Assistance in the search came from Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office and a unit from California Fish and Wildlife. After about 90 minutes, CHP called off the search at about 1:30 p.m.
“We looked and looked for him (the driver) and eventually exhausted all means we had,” Crouch said, noting that an officer positioned on the other side of the river did not see anyone crossing.
Officers do not know the identity of the driver. The vehicle was confirmed to have been stolen but it’s not yet known from where it was taken.
Anyone with information is asked to call CHP at 707-464-3117.
