Inmates from Pelican Bay State Prison walked the four-lane section of U.S. 101 north of Washington Boulevard Thursday, picking up refuse and other stuff. Del Norte County Supervisor Roger Gitlin was with them and said the workers found everything from a 1991 ID card to a small amount of money, which was given to Caltrans. Crews will be cleaning sections of state right of way every month, and prison officials are meeting with other county and state officials to explore ways the crews can be used to assist other government agencies around the county.
