A coastbound driver was hospitalized with major injuries Tuesday morning after the truck and trailer he was operating slid off U.S. 199 about a mile from U.S. 101 and rolled 130 feet down a steep Smith River bank.
According to California Highway Patrol reports, Daniel Collins, 53, of Klamath Falls, was southbound on U.S. 199 at about 35 to 40 mph when he entered a sharp curve and slid off the right side of the road near mile marker 1.
“The truck rolled a number of times down a steep embankment,” according to a CHP report. “As the truck rolled, Collins was ejected and came to rest down the embankment.”
The truck’s empty flatbed trailer disconnected in the crash.
Del Norte County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue was called to the scene, along with CHP, Crescent City Fire and Rescue, State Parks, Fish and Wildlife, Caltrans and Del Norte Ambulance.
Collins was taken to Sutter Coast Hospital for treatment. According to the report, Collins was not wearing his seat belt.
