Police Chief Ivan Minsal asked for a moment of silence at Monday’s City Council meeting for a retired Police K9 who worked in Crescent City for about nine years.

Born in 2005, K9 Apollo started with Crescent City Police in 2007, and retired in 2014. Minsal said Apollo was a dual-purpose K9, working in apprehension as well as narcotics detection.

“He was involved in hundreds of arrests for narcotics, and some apprehensions, but most of all, he was loved by the kids and the community of Crescent City,” Minsal said. “His handler, Officer (Aaron) King, also retired, took Apollo with him and they have lived together since 2014.”

Minsal noted many K9s die in the line of duty and most serve about nine years. Five have died in the U.S. since January, Minsal said.

Apollo died last week at his home in Montana.
