Local advocates for children and families on Monday will honor young ones who have been hurt or who have lost their lives through abuse and neglect.

The Child Abuse Prevention Council will raise its flag at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds, commemorating April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. This year's guest speaker will be Sunset High School English teacher Kelly Troyna, said Vicki Baldwin, parent education coordinator for the Del Norte Child Care Council.

The Del Norte County Sheriff's Explorers Post 911 will present the flag, Baldwin said.

Though the ceremony will take place at the fairgrounds, Del Norters will see CAPC flags flying throughout the county during April, Baldwin said.

"We have about 28 flags flown in Del Norte County," she said. "All the schools will have one up, Health and Human Services, other nonprofits, the Child Care Council, CASA; you'll see them all over (during) April."

The flag-raising ceremony will also kick off a series of events focusing on child abuse prevention. These include the Youth and Family Fair next weekend and a roundtable speaker later in the month, Baldwin said. She said she will also be taking part in Kids Day at the Capitol in Sacramento on April 11.

Locally, CAPC's flag raising ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the flagpole at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds. For more information about CAPC, visit https://www.facebook.com/DNCAPC.
