One person died and three others were injured Friday in a crash on U.S. 101 south of Crescent City.

The crash happened about 3 p.m. Friday at Mile Marker 19.11.

At the scene, California Highway Patrol Sgt. John Crouch confirmed that four people were in a southbound car when for unknown reasons, it crossed the oncoming lane, collided with a large tree, went 30 to 40 feet down the embankment, and overturned. He said it was too soon to determine what caused the crash.

No other vehicles or people were involved.

Sheriff’s Search and Rescue personnel were called to assist. Crescent City Fire and Rescue, along with an ambulance from Klamath Volunteer Fire Department were onscene.

One patient was flown by Cal Ore Life Flight to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, and two others were transported to Sutter Coast Hospital. CHP Lt. Larry Depee said at the scene that the patient had sustained critical injuries.

Traffic was blocked for about 15 minutes to transfer the patient from the ground ambulance to the helicopter.

The decedent was identified as Wau-Kela Dowd, 17, of Klamath. Her next of kin have been notified.

As of press time Friday, CHP investigators were still on the scene and no further information has been released. Traffic on the grade was stopped for about 40 minutes so California Auto Image personnel could recover the vehicle.
