In recognition of their business's centennial, the Crescent City-Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce will honor Baird and Jane Rumiano this Fourth of July.

The Rumianos, owner of Rumiano Cheese Co., will be the grand marshals in this year's parade, said chamber Executive Director Sarah Caron. The chamber sent out a request to the community for nominations earlier this year and the Fourth of July planning committee made a selection among the submissions it received, she said.

"We're so honored to have such dedicated community members having their business in Del Norte County," Caron said Friday. "To have a business, an internationally-known successful business, in our community for 100 years is such an incredible honor and we are so proud to recognize them in this manner."

According to Rumiano Cheese's website, Richard, Fred and John Rumiano emigrated to the U.S. from Italy at the turn of the century, pooled their resources and bought a small dairy in Willows in 1919. By the mid-1930s, their dairy had grown into the largest cheese company in the state with eight factories. However, the Rumiano family sold all but two of their facilities.

In 1980, Baird and his brother John Rumiano bought the company, became its president and vice president and focused on foodservice distribution. Cheese production takes place in Crescent City, while its distribution center is in Willows.

According to the company's website, Del Norte and Humboldt County's mild climate and rainfall produces "some of the finest milk in the nation." Rumiano receives about 300,000 pounds of milk every day.

Rumiano Cheese employs about 150 workers at both its facilities, most of whom have been with the company for 20 years, according to www.rumianocheese.com.

According to Caron, those wanting to take part in the Fourth of July parade can visit the chamber office or its Facebook page for an application. The chamber is also offering a $50 off the vendor fee for businesses in Crescent City or Brookings wanting to show off their wares during the holiday festivities, she said.

"We're trying to showcase the best Del Norte County has to offer," Caron said.

The Crescent City-Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at 1001 Front St., Crescent City. For more information, call 707- 464-3174 or visit www.delnorte.org or www.facebook.com/CCDNChamber/.
