By Tuesday evening, searchers were still unable to find a Crescent City woman who was reported last seen late Sunday night in a kayak on Lake Earl.
“Late Sunday afternoon/evening Natasha Steele and Drew Wiseman went into the lake with a kayak which, a short time later, developed a leak and sank,” a Del Norte County Sheriff’s social media post said Tuesday. “Fighting the cold water and wind for hours, Wiseman finally made it to shore but lost track of Steele.”
According to sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Steven, the two set out to find a herd of elk on the other side of the lake. He described the two-person kayak as being made of hard, green plastic. The kayak was recovered Tuesday.
Sheriff’s Search and Rescue personnel arrived in the area about 1 a.m. Monday and searched into the daylight hours. A Coast Guard helicopter arrived to assist, along with a K-9 unit and an ATV. Personnel from National and State Parks, Coast Guard, and Fish and Wildlife also assisted.
Steven wanted to thank several residents who arrived with their own boats to assist with the search.
