A pursuit that started near Hiouchi Tuesday afternoon ended with a wanted subject at large near Low Divide Road.
Del Norte County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Steven said a deputy driving on U.S. 199 near Hiouchi passed a westbound vehicle driven by Nolan Travis, who he recognized as having a warrant for his arrest. After the vehicle turned onto California 197, units from State Parks, the Del Norte Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol were en route to cut the vehicle off.
However, Travis turned off California 197 onto Low Divide Road and attempted to accelerate away on the gravel road in his 2007 Saturn Vue, officers said. The chase continued before turning onto Road 17N21.
According to Steven, the vehicle pursuit ended when the vehicle went off an embankment and about 30 feet down into the trees.
Travis bailed on foot into the trees, leaving passenger Candace Swain inside, according to Steven.
Officers from State Parks, CHP and the sheriff’s deputies continued to search for Nolan. Steven said he has an active parole violation warrant for his arrest. He was not located as of press time Tuesday.
Steven said that during the pursuit, officers observed Nolan attempting to throw something out of the vehicle’s window. Officers were also searching the area as of press time.
Swain was not arrested and was transported back to the city. A tow truck was dispatched to the area to retrieve the vehicle.
