Searchers with Del Norte Sheriff’s Office and California Fish and Wildlife have been unable to locate Natasha Steele, missing since June 2 on the waters of Lake Earl.

Sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Steven said Drew Wiseman and Steele set out from the south end of the lake in a hard plastic kayak late that afternoon. Steven said the two were crossing the lake to get close to a herd of elk but their kayak sprung a leak and sank.

“Fighting the cold water and wind for hours, Wiseman finally made it to shore but lost track of Steele,” Steven’s report said.

Search and Rescue, National and State Parks, the Coast Guard and local volunteers searched overnight and into the next day but were unable to locate Steele.

Steven said the search was scaled back and searchers are using a boat and a drone camera to search the waters of the shallow lake. Searchers can fly the camera over the water to look for evidence and drop down to investigate closer if anything is found, he said.
