After a week of searching Lake Earl, a tip from a local helicopter pilot led to the recovery of Natashia Steele, believed to have drowned June 2.
Del Norte Sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Steven said pilot Dan Brattain was flying over the lake when he noticed something odd in the water and investigated. Bratton notified the sheriff’s office and led them to the location off Lakeside Drive, Steven said.
Steele’s next of kin have been notified of the recovery and a sheriff’s release expressed condolences to the family.
“We know that this has been a very difficult week for them,” the release said.
Steele was reported to have been sharing a hard plastic kayak with Drew Wiseman when the craft started leaking. Wiseman was able to swim to shore but Steele could not be located.
Coast Guard, National Parks, Search and Rescue and some community members assisted in the search.
