An 18-year-old was killed in a crash at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9.

Police said before the crash, Dylan Cervantes of Crescent City was traveling northbound on Lower Lake Road, north of Mud Hen Village Road, in a 2003 Ford.

An unoccupied John Deere loader was partially blocking the northbound lane, according to a statement from California Highway Patrol (CHP). CHP said Cervantes “failed to observe” the John Deere loader and hit the bucket head on.

CHP said Cervantes suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not immediately clear why the heavy equipment was obstructing the road. CHP said the crash investigation is ongoing. Crescent City Fire, Cal Fire and the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

Editors note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Cervantes was transported by Del Norte Ambulance to Sutter Coast Hospital and later declared to have died from injuries suffered in the crash. California Highway Patrol corrected its previous report.
