Police shooting

The Del Norte County District Attorney’s office is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place at a home on the 2700 block of Peveler Avenue in the Bertsch-Oceanview community on May 9.

Del Norte County Sheriff Deputies responded to a “welfare check” call at approximately 9:10 a.m. for a male subject “who was making 5150 statements after not passing his driving test,” according to the Del Norte County Sheriff’s call log.

The situation escalated shortly after deputies arrived. The officer-involved shooting occurred, although it’s unknown as of press time who was shot, and in what manner. What is known is that a person sustained fatal injuries.

The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Department has not issued a press release as of noon, Wednesday. District Attorney Katherine Micks stated her office has initiated an investigation, as is standard procedure when a peace officer-involved shooting occurs.

This is a developing story.
