California Highway Patrol investigators say a man who eluded officers on foot after a car chase that ended near Ruby Van Deventer Park on Jan. 7 remains at large.
Investigators said a passenger in the vehicle, Irene Jewel Watkins, 32, was arrested when she and the at large subject fled the car on foot, following a pursuit by CHP on U.S. 199. She was charged with resisting or obstructing officers, providing false information, receiving stolen property, false impersonation, possessing stolen property and a post-release community supervision violation. Watkins’ California ID card listed her residential status as transient.
Watkins was taken to county jail where she remained as of Wednesday.
According to CHP Information Officer Brandy Gonzalez, the car was stolen from Montana “a long time ago,” and had no plates on it.
According to CHP Sgt. John Crouch, officers observed the speeding Honda Accord southbound near Gasquet. When a traffic stop was attempted, the vehicle failed to yield to the officers and a pursuit began.
The vehicle turned onto California 197 and eventually, into Ruby Van Deventer Park, where occupants fled on foot, according to investigators. A physical description of the driver was not available but he was last seen heading toward U.S. 101 from Ruby Van Deventer Park in the early afternoon Monday.
