With state health officials declaring that Dungeness crab caught between Patrick’s Point and the Oregon state line safe to eat, the commercial fishery will open next week.

The commercial Dungeness crab fishery will open at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 18 following a 64-hour gear setting period that starts Tuesday, according to a California Department of Fish and Wildlife press release. The recreational fishery between Patrick’s Point and the Oregon order will also open, according to the release.

Though the commercial season south of Patrick’s Point opened Jan. 15, elevated levels of domoic acid delayed the start of the season north of that area. On Friday, the director of the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment and the state public health officer declared that crab caught in that area no longer posed a threat, according to the press release.
