Volunteers with the American Red Cross will install free smoke alarms and replace batteries in existing detectors starting Thursday.

The Red Cross's Sound the Alarm Campaign seeks to educate families about fire prevention and safety and fundraise to sponsor its campaign to install free smoke detectors, according to a press release from the organization.

In four years, the Red Cross has installed more than 1 million smoke alarms, saved 511 lives and made 648,757 households safer. To schedule an appointment or find out how to volunteer, call (707) 832-5480.
