A police spokesman said Jennifer Jill Edwards, 45, was arrested on child abuse charges after her 4-year-old foster child was flown to the University of California San Francisco Medical Center on Nov. 7 for a medical emergency.
The Crescent City Police Department was alerted Nov. 8 and arrested Edwards on Nov. 15, said Police Chief Richard Griffin.
“[There was] no danger anymore with the actual victim. That’s why there was a lapse in the (time of) arrest,” Griffin said.
Edwards remained lodged at the Del Norte County Jail, with bail set at $1 million.
Police said she was scheduled to appear for her first court date in Del Norte Superior Court on Thursday morning, facing possible charges of torture, child abuse, great bodily injury to a child under 5 years old, cruelty to an animal, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a smoking device, and criminal storage of a fire arm in the third degree (meaning storing a loaded firearm where a person knows, or reasonably should know, that a child is likely to gain access to it without permission of a parent or guardian).
Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation, according to Griffin.
