Eugene “Gene” Leroy Wester, 79, passed away in Crescent City on March 8, 2017. Gene was born on May 7, 1937 to Carl and Florence Wester in North Hollywood. He graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1954. Gene enlisted in the Naval Reserves during high school and was called to active duty on July 15, 1954. He served in the Navy Reserves until 1972. Having visited Klamath and Crescent City on many hunting and fishing trips with his father as a child, Gene moved to Crescent City in 1973, where he met his wife, Cheryl. They married Nov. 3, 1973. Gene began working for the Redwood National Parks in 1975 and retired in 2009. Gene served the federal government for 44 years.
Since receiving his cancer diagnosis last July, Gene chose to spend the time he had left doing the things he loved. Cheryl and Gene traveled, staying at wonderful resorts and eating some delicious meals. Gene played multiple rounds of golf on some of his favorite courses in Oregon. Gene was a fan of all sports, especially golf and college football.
Gene is survived by his wife, Cheryl Wester, son Jon (Pia) Wester, son Matthew Wester, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Gene will be interred at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Medford, Oregon, 2201 N. Phoenix Road, Medford, OR 97504. He said that anyone who came to see him would be able to go play golf at Centennial Golf Club or visit the winery next door or both. So stop by if you’re in the neighborhood.
